About

I am Sunil Deepak, a grandfather, a retired doctor and an aspiring writer from India. After a life-time full of international travels, now I spend most of my time in Schio, a tiny mountain town in the north-east of Italy.

I love reading - most of the time, I have at least 3 open books on my bedside table. I try to write on my blogs regularly, especially on this blog and my Hindi blog. I like visiting art exhibitions, interviewing people, history, cooking, going for cycle tours and long walks (while listening to podcasts). I also love spending time with my family, especially my grand-daughter.

There was a time when I travelled all over the world, visiting 30-40 countries each year. Perhaps because of that, I am not very fond of travelling now, except for going back to India regularly. I was also very fond of photography at one time, but nowadays, I mostly limit it mainly for my blogs.

My Work-Life

I have worked in the areas of community health, leprosy, disabilities and community research. If you are interested in my professional work, you can check some of my research papers and publications. I do not accept paid work any more. However, I am active with some local non-profits and with some grassroots' organisations in India.

My Book-Writing

In 2023, I completed my first Hindi fiction book, about a man searching for his mother. That book has been with a publisher in India, for more than 3 years with little hopes of its publishing. In the mean time, I have finished 2 more books and working on another 3.

In June 2026, I have decided to publish my books on my Hindi blog - on 1st June, I have started publishing a fantasy book titled "Devi Pratima Ke Rakshak". If you can read Hindi, do read it and send me your comments. You can read it on my blog Jo Na Keh Sake

I am also writing a non-fiction book in English on the love story from 1950s, between Italian film-director Roberto Rossellini and Sonali Senroy Dasgupta, who was at that time married to Indian film-director Harisadhan Dasgupta

So as you can see writing books is a fundamental part of my life these days. Being retired and having options for self-publishing, gives me the freedom to do it the way I want. On most days, I spend 6-7 hours writing and it is one of the greatest joys of my life.

My Dreams

I would like very much to be a part of a small group of elderly persons, especially men, who spend some time together doing creative writing and talking about writing. I have thought of starting such a group - I am sure that in Schio, I would find many persons who would be interested in it. However, as I grow older, the days seem to pass faster and there is little free time, so I am afraid of taking on more than I can manage.

However, I am a part of a reading group in Schio, we meet once a month.

I also like meeting people. If you are in or near Schio and are looking for a friend or advice about India or cooking of Indian food, do contact me. I can speak Italian, English, Hindi, and some French and Portuguese.

Finally, the picture below has me with my grand-daughter.
